Dear Governor Brown,
I urge you to honor the bi-state, compromise agreement to reform Columbia River fisheries, phase out non-selective commercial gillnetting, and finally recognize the value of Columbia River sport fisheries!
In 2012 agency officials, conservationists, and fishing groups agreed to a historic, phased-in plan that included financial support for the gillnet industry to transition to more sustainable fishing practices. Part of this funding was generated by a new $9.75 endorsement fee on Columbia River sport fishers.
Now on the eve of the final transition, the gillnet industry is seeking to gut key provisions of the plan, including the move away from non-selective gillnetting.
We urge you to reject this cynical effort and honor your commitment to implement this bi-state, compromise plan.
